Impersonation (online)
Online impersonation is presenting an account, page or message as if it belongs to a specific real person or organisation without their permission, usually by using their name, photos and details. Platforms treat it as a policy violation with dedicated report forms; the law treats it as a crime when it is used for fraud, harassment or defamation. Face search is one of the ways people discover accounts impersonating them.

What distinguishes impersonation from a fake account?
Any invented identity is a fake account. Impersonation targets a particular real person or brand: the fake uses their name, their photos or both, so that others believe they are dealing with that person. Catfishing usually impersonates a real person whose photos were borrowed; a romance scam profile usually does too, which is why the person in the photos often discovers dozens of accounts in their likeness.
How do platforms handle it?
| Platform | Route | Who can report |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram, Facebook | Impersonation report form, in-app or without an account | The person impersonated, or someone on their behalf with ID |
| TikTok | In-app report, impersonation category | Anyone; verification may be requested |
| X | Impersonation report form; parody must be labelled | The person or an authorised representative |
| Report profile, fake or impersonation | Anyone | |
| Dating apps | In-app report on the profile | Anyone |
When is it a crime?
Impersonation becomes a criminal matter when it is used to obtain money or property (fraud), to threaten or distress (harassment), to damage reputation (defamation, civil in most places), or when it involves sexual images (NCII). Several US states and India's IT Act (section 66D, cheating by personation using a computer) have specific online impersonation offences. Parody and commentary that are clearly labelled are generally protected and permitted by platform rules.
How do people find accounts impersonating them?
Usually a friend notices, or a scam victim tracks down the real person. A reverse face search finds public pages where the person's face appears, which surfaces impersonation accounts on platforms whose profiles are public, and reposts on other sites. It does not reach private accounts, so it is a sweep, not a census. Evidence to keep before reporting: the account URL, screenshots with the date visible, and the original photos with their dates.
What removal routes exist besides the platform?
- A DMCA takedown for photos you took yourself (selfies), since you own the copyright.
- Search engine removal requests when the impersonating page ranks for your name.
- Police reports where fraud or harassment is involved; the platform report often moves faster once a case number exists.
Questions
Someone is using my photos but a different name. Is that impersonation?
Platforms usually treat it as impersonation of you or as a fake account; report it under both categories if the form allows. A DMCA notice applies if you took the photos.
Can a face search remove the fake account?
No. It can help you find the accounts. Removal happens through the platform's report route, listed in the directory.
